Meeting the Need

More than 54% of all Peruvians live below the poverty line and live without the basic necessities of life such as running water, electricity, nourishment, and education. Some basic facts further describe the needs of poor families in Peru:

  • Peru’s total population is 27.8 million, of which nearly 1 million live in Callao and the shantyown of Pachacutec. 65% of the population in Pachacutec earn less than $200 per year.
  • 54.8% of all Peruvian families live in total poverty (roughly 14.6 million people), on less than $2 per day and 95% of the people in Pachacutec live on less than $1 per day .
  • Of the 3.8 million people who live in extreme poverty, 2.1 million are children. From a total of 10.2 million people below 18 years of age, more than 6.5 million live below the poverty level.
  • It is estimated that more than 3 million poor children do not receive any aid from the government, due to an inefficient distribution of resources.
  • An estimated 1.9 million children, fully one quarter of children in Peru, go to work at an early age in very menial street jobs where they are exposed to many dangers.
  • Chronic undernourishment affects 19% of urban and 48% of rural children.

Coprodeli works to not only help those in immediate need but also to combat the root causes of poverty. Education and economic development combine to create lasting, positive change.

Our Mission

Coprodeli USA supports the work of Coprodeli in Peru which aids Peruvian families by providing for fundamental needs, promoting education and job training, and developing strong self-sustaining community programs. Volunteers from the U.S., Europe, Latin America, and from among the disadvantaged people of Peru provide hope and vital services to those in need.

Padre Miguel Ranera, a Spanish missionary priest, together with a group of Peruvian volunteers, has dedicated his adult life to serving the poorest of the poor. Since 1984, they have concentrated their efforts in the 30 "barrios", or neighborhoods, in Callao where between 80-90% of the population have unsatisfied basic needs and live in extreme poverty. In 1989, driven by his dedication to the poor and a desire to develop a structured, focused sustainable development program, Padre Miguel formalized their efforts and created The Coprodeli Foundation a not-for-profit international organization designed to assist, in a comprehensive and long-term manner, the poorest children and families of Callao

The organization has made incredible strides over the past nineteen years, in part due to its response as external shocks have affected areas of intervention. In 1988, Callao was inundated with heavy flooding that primarily affected the poorest families in the area. In 2000, the shanty village of Pachacutec formed and again, Coprodeli was at the scene delivering relief to the neediest families. Eventually, Padre and team implemented long term solutions for education, housing, and business development. These programs are pillars to Coprodeli’s intervention strategy, which was critical in response to the most recent external shock, the 8.0 earthquake that hit the Ica region of Peru in August 2007. Coprodeli has since expanded its work to the provinces of Ica, Chincha, Pisco and Cañete , the most severely affected areas, in order to provide social and humanitarian assistance, and to promote and facilitate the reconstruction in terms of sustainability, dignity and community.
