Small Business Specialist 

Internship - Location: Peru - Time Commitment: > 5 months

Organization Description:

COPRODELI USA is a non-profit organization that aids Peruvian families by supporting, through annual financial and volunteer assistance, the grassroots development work carried out by the NGO, COPRODELI Peru.

 

COPRODELI Peru is an international development organization dedicated to serving the poorest areas of Peru by building sustainable programs in education, health, housing, job training, micro-entrepreneurship and food security since 1989.  Driven by principles of economic and social inclusion, the organization sees to the needs of marginalized communities in Callao, Pachacutec, Ica, and San Martin and carries out social development projects benefiting 110,000 people each year.  Coprodeli has not only been successful in responding to the basic needs of thousands of families, but also in empowering beneficiaries to be agents of change in their communities. 

 

The Junior Achievement Program, or “La Compañía” as it’s known in Peru, allows high school students to embark on business endeavors and get first-hand experience in running a business. During the program, students build and execute micro-companies - from business plan to production to liquidation - learning a range of skills such as planning, operations, marketing, management, and strategic analysis. The goal is to have the students contribute to and engage their communities. 

 

 

Internship Position Description:

The Small Business Specialist will report directly to the School Director and will be an integral part of our Junior Achievement Program, providing instruction to highs school students in areas such as labor relations, finance, accounting, the economy, human resources, marketing, business operations and entrepreneurship. The Small Business Specialist will provide the students with all information and training to create a hands-on project of running their own small business. 

 

This person is responsible for:   

 

  • Deliver instruction on topics such as the principles of marketing, how to operate a business, and the financial aspects of business.

  • Teach basic economics, resume writing, facts about marketing, business, entrepreneurship, accounting, and finance.

  • Deliver the skills and knowledge necessary for students to function as responsible citizens in the business world.

  • Record grades, grade papers, and perform other administrative duties as needed.

  • Create and supplement lesson plans & utilize various curriculum resources.

  • Integrate competencies, goals, and objectives into lesson plans.

  • Utilize curricula that reflect the diverse educational, cultural, and economic backgrounds of the students served.

  • Develop incentives to keep students engaged and help them run the business.

  • Work with program coordinators to ensure initiatives are being met.

  • Tutor students on an individual basis.

 

Location 

The Small Business Specialist internship position will be based in Pachacutec, Ica, or San Martin jungle, in Peru and will occasionally travel to our regional sites for project formulation and management functions. 

 

Compensation

This person will receive free housing at our humble Volunteer House and will receive a monthly stipend of s/. 400 soles that covers basic living costs.

 

Requirements

  • Ability to commit to teaching for 5 months. Preference will be given to candidates that can commit to longer periods of time.

  • Fluency in Spanish required.

  • Must have experience teaching and/or working with adolescents (Ages 14-16)

  • Willingness to: work in impoverished areas with petty theft, use public transportation, live with irregular internet service and water access.

  • Completed undergraduate study in: Economics, Business, International Business, Business Education, Marketing, International Marketing, or other related fields.

  • Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently, keep deadlines and commitments.

  • Detail-oriented with creative and collaborative perspective.

  • Proficiency in MS Office, especially MSWord and MSExcel.
