Organization Description:

COPRODELI USA is a non-profit organization that aids Peruvian families by supporting, through annual financial and volunteer assistance, the grassroots development work carried out by the NGO, COPRODELI Peru.

 

COPRODELI Peru is an international development organization dedicated to serving the poorest areas of Peru by building sustainable programs in education, health, housing, job training, micro-entrepreneurship and food security since 1989.  Driven by principles of economic and social inclusion, the organization sees to the needs of marginalized communities in Callao, Pachacutec, Ica, and San Martin and carries out social development projects benefiting 110,000 people each year.  Coprodeli has not only been successful in responding to the basic needs of thousands of families, but also in empowering beneficiaries as participants in program efforts.

 

Position Description:

The English Teacher will report directly to the School Director. The teacher will create and maintain an educational atmosphere that encourages effective student learning and supports school and organization programs and goals. 

 

This person is responsible for:   

 

  • Instructing ESL classes to groups of up to 30 elementary school students (Ages 3-10) using a variety of activities and engaging teaching strategies/learning activities and student assessment methods 

  • Planning and developing detailed lesson plans and materials that support the learning objectives and planned activities

  • Engaging children activities in a creative and cheerful manner ( singing, music, games) 

  • Managing the classrooms effectively including maintaining good student discipline and supporting the discipline standards and rules of the school 

  • Teaching social skills (manners, sharing, resolving disagreements, values)

  • Demonstrating flexibility and patience when students conditions change 

  • Fostering learning skills and school readiness (listening, sounds, shapes,  rhyming, etc.)

  • Communicating with parents and participating in PTA meetings

  • Maintaining a safe and nurturing environment

  • Administrative responsibilities: completing forms and documentation as required 

  • Maintaining cleanliness of games, toys, and child care space

  • Attending staff meetings and trainings, as needed

 

Location 

The English Teacher internship position will be based in Callao, Pachacutec, Ica, Chincha, Cañete, or the San Martin jungle, Peru and will occasionally travel to our regional sites for project formulation and management functions. 

 

Compensation

This person will receive free housing at our humble Volunteer House and will receive a monthly stipend of s/. 500 soles which covers basic living costs.

 

Requirements

  • Ability to commit to living in Peru and interning with Coprodeli for > 4 months. Preference will be given to candidates that can commit to longer periods of time.

  • Ability to cover travel expenses from originating country to Peru, as well as cover any additional travel expenses within Peru.

  • Fluency in English and intermediate level of Spanish required.

  • Experience working with very young children (3-10 years old).

  • Willingness to work in impoverished areas with petty theft; use public transportation, live with irregular internet service and water access, etc. 

  • Completed undergraduate study in: Education, Early Education, English, Communications, Latin American Studies, etc. TEFL/TESOL certificate preferred.  

  • Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently, keep deadlines and commitments.

  • A well-balanced, flexible and adaptable nature.

  • Detail-oriented with creative and collaborative perspective.
